Important Topics to Cover in CAT Exam to Crack IIM

important topics to cover in CAT exam to crack IIM

Important topics in CAT – Want to skip some topics and still crack an IIM? Well, you have come to the right place. We’ll take you through all the information required to do this smartly. Due to lack of time to prepare, not preparing well enough or some other factors may lead you to think this way. Because of the vast syllabus and some above-mentioned factors, many find it difficult to cover all the topics.

One’s main aim to write the CAT exam is to get a seat in the prestigious IIM’s. It may be due to the good academics provided there, oldest institutes, good history of placements, high average salary, brand value, and many more. Don’t let the lack of preparation hamper your chances of securing a call from an IIM.

You might wonder that we should know all the important topics and get a 98 or 99 percentile in CAT to get a call from the famous A, B & C or the top 5-6 IIMs. And you are right about that, focusing on Important topics and skipping some topics might or might not help you to get a call from those big players but you can surely get calls from the baby IIMs formed recently like IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Nagpur, IIM Visakhapatnam, etc. They are just behind those big players and even get guidance from the top IIMs and are growing fast second to none of the private institutes out there. And you don’t want to miss a chance of getting a call from them. At the end of the day, it is still an IIM.

Analysis of topics that have less probability of being asked

Now we got all the information needed to verify our decision. With no further delay, let us analyze topics that have less probability of being asked, or topics without being prepared and scoring a very good percentile in CAT Exam.

Verbal Ability: It is a clear-cut answer that reading comprehension takes up a large chunk of weightage in the verbal ability of 24 questions out of 34. There, not much preparation that goes into this. You just must practice reading and you are good to go with comprehension. Other most important topics in the recent years’ paper include – Odd sentences, Para jumbles, Para summary of almost 3 questions each. With this, you are good to go for the verbal ability section. There are multiple topics on which reading comprehensions can be given such as Economics, Business, Human Behavior, Geography, Linguistic studies, Environment, Culture, Biology, History, Happiness, Finance, Technology and story based. So, these are some Important topics on which you might want to read up.

  • Attempt around 20+ questions with an accuracy of 85% to score a 99+ percentile.
Attempt around 15+ questions with an accuracy of 85% to score a 95+ percentile.
Attempt around 12+ questions with an accuracy of 95% to score a 90+ percentile
  • X Topics you may leave while preparing for CAT: Certain Type Of Reading comprehensions like Happiness, Linguistic studies, Biology, History, Geography
  •  ✓ Topics you need to concentrate on: Odd Sentences, Para Summary, Para Jumbles, Reading Comprehensions on Economics, Business, Environment, Culture.

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning: Again, the practice of different kinds of problems will help you read and solve questions faster which will increase your percentile. These questions in this section are quite long and students tend to get stuck in one question and lose track of time. It is important to choose a question that you have an idea of how to approach so that you can solve it quickly.

  • X Attempt around 16+ questions with an accuracy of 85% to score a 99+ percentile.
Attempt around 12+ questions with an accuracy of 85% to score a 95+ percentile.
Attempt around 10+ questions with an accuracy of 85% to score a 90+ percentile
  • X Topics you may leave while preparing for CAT: Venn Diagrams, Logical Deduction, Rankings
  • ✓ Topics you need to concentrate on: Graphs related, Data Distribution, Complex Arrangements, Seating & Data Arrangements

Quantitative Reasoning: The importance of topic-wise preparation is huge in this section. Verbal Ability or DILR are such sections where even though you leave or do not prepare for some topics, you can go on and attempt directly in the exam without preparation.
One basic thing everyone needs to keep in mind that, a question doesn’t always belong to a single topic. Questions are mostly a mixture of multiple topics like Permutations & Combinations combined with Probability or Profit & Loss combined with Simple Interest & Compound Interest and the list goes on. So, it is always a good practice to learn the basics of all the topics and then concentrate on certain important topics or leave some topics. This will give some confidence to you as you would not be leaving all the topics directly.

  • Attempt around 26+ questions with an accuracy of 85% to score a 99+ percentile.
Attempt around 20+ questions with an accuracy of 85% to score a 95+ percentile.
Attempt around 17+ questions with an accuracy of 85% to score a 90+ percentile
  • X Topics you may leave while preparing for CAT: Numbers and Algebra
  • Topics you need to concentrate on: Geometric, Arithmetic, Modern Math

Coaching offers me personalized attention and a competitive environment. Because the preparation was so rigorous, I eventually began to perform at my best. The mock interviews/GD/WATs were conducted by anonymous panels, and it really boosted my confidence. Although I got a call from SCMHRD (SNAP-98.12), Abhijeet sir felt that I should try again and aim for IIM-A/B/C. It has been your pleasure to have been your mentor.
