IPMAT Preparation Guide – start right after 10th std

IPMAT 2022 Exam Structure

IPMAT exam is a computer-based online examination. The exam duration is of 2 hours. IPMAT is conducted by IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak individually. Hence, there are differences in the number of questions asked in each of the examination. It is important for students to be aware of the number of questions asked in each section and the marking scheme put in place by the exam conducting institutes.

IPMAT Indore Exam Pattern - 2022

Three sections, namely Quantitative Ability (MCQ), Quantitative Ability (Short Answer Question-SA), and Verbal Ability, contain a total of 100 MCQ questions. The candidate must pursue all the sections in a pre-specified order that is common for all. Each question carries four marks. There is negative marking of -1 for attempting a question incorrectly in all the sections, except Quantitative Ability (QA – SA) section.

Section NameQuestions FormatNumber of QuestionsTime Duration (In Minutes)Marks per Question
Quantitative Ability (QA)Multiple Choice (MCQs)             40                   40          +4/-1

Verbal Ability (VA)Multiple Choice (MCQs)             40                   40          +4/-1

IPMAT Rohtak Exam Pattern – 2022

IPMAT Rohtak has a different exam pattern when compared to IIM Indore. IPMAT Rohtak has a logical reasoning section which has 40 questions when compared to IPMAT Indore. Hence, the exam has 120 total number of questions. IPM Rohtak awards 4 marks for correct answer and -1 for incorrect answer.

Section NameQuestions FormatNumber of QuestionsTime Duration (In Minutes)Marks per Question
Quantitative Ability (QA)Multiple Choice (MCQs)             40                   40          +4/-1
Logical Reasoning (LR)Multiple Choice (MCQs)             40                   40          +4/-1
Verbal Ability (VA)Multiple Choice (MCQs)             40                   40          +4/-1

After evaluating the paper pattern for both IPMAT Indore 2022 and IPMAT Rohtak 2022, it can be said that both the exams involve idea-based questions. Apparently, IPM Indore gives more weightage to quantitative ability. In IPMAT Indore, 60 % weightage is given to QA. While, IPM Rohtak allot equal weightage to all 3 sections. IPM Rohtak does not have QA-SA section unlike IPM Indore.

IPMAT Preparation Strategy

The Basics

Periodically study and practice questions based on the fundamentals. The fundamental concepts of Mathematics and Grammar from class 6 to class 10 are good to begin with.

Practice Section-wise

Practice easy to a high-level difficulty questions. Do this for every section. Based on your strengths you can work on a specific section.

Planned IPMAT Training

Plan your IPMAT preparation for 1-2 hours every day. With an emphasis on the everyday practice of mathematics, 1-2 RC passages, grammar, and vocabulary. Practice mock tests, sectional assessments, and subject tests

at least once in a week. If you are preparing for IPMAT Rohtak, then try solving 1-2 puzzles or LR sets daily alongside standard subject tests and sectional tests weekly.

Study Tests: IPMAT 2022 is an exam that tests you on both bits of knowledge of the subject and expertise in time management. Writing mocks will help you manage your time and gives good playing field for the exam day. Schedule the mocks at least once every 10 days for both IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak.

Analyse Mocks

This is the most significant step in your planning. Make sure you spend at least 3-4 hours evaluating each mock test. Until looking at alternatives, re-attempt the text. Analyse your strengths and shortcomings. This will help you understand the type of problems you can skip or how you can correctly answer them by approaching alternate techniques.

Do not postpone training

Do not wait until your 12th class to kick start your IPM preparation. As soon as you begin 11th class, begin IPMAT planning so that you can keep IPMAT studies alongside school academics. Regularly attempt mocks and sectional assessments to keep your plan and training on track and realize how well you are performing alongside your competitors.

Fastest way to cover Entire Syllabus

Due to high competition in this entrance exam and the low number of seats, it is really important that students start right at the end of 10th standard. By starting early, they will be able to grasp the study material fast and be on top of the competition. Starting early will also allow them to have a relaxed and stretched out schedule over 2 years which will ensure them advantage for practicing mocks.

When to start and Why

We all know how relevant the class 12 boards are. The first move in the class 12 boards is to efficiently score good marks is to prepare a schedule.

To ease your burden in 12th and make your preparation easy, you should start in 11th standard. By doing so you will effectively divide the portion of IPMAT across 11th and 12th standard as the portion is common across the school subjects and IPMAT.

We suggest you obey the 70-30 guidelines by the end of the 10th class. It means that you devote 70 percent of your self-study time to the planning of IPMAT in 11th and 30 percent to the class 12th syllabus.

If you allot 4-5 hours per day for self-study by devoting a maximum of 2 hours revising the syllabus covered on that particular day. Schedule weekdays in a manner that you devote 2 hours/day on DI or QA and 1 hour on VA of the 3 hours left for IPMAT training. So, QA (P&C) + VA (RCs) maybe Monday, and so on. You could add 3-4 extra hours to your practice time on weekends. Study time for class 12 students is a must have thing to approach the exam. It should also include self-study time-table alongside discipline.

Until you reach December, you’d have winter holidays, start targeting MOCK IMPAT online and evaluate your performance; on Sunday, starting from December-mid, you could hopefully try one test. This will assist you to assess your results, the areas you are good at, and the areas that need extra effort. You’d also get another round of tests in December by your school, which would give you insights into your success in class 11th or 12th. During class 12 boards preparation, a student is still expected to revise concepts. IPM mock test will help during that time. The tests should be planned in such a way it does not affect the study plan for 12th boards.

Do invest time in learning how the tests are arranged as per the board department. This will give you time to focus on the IPMAT planning schedule. Make sure that you spend at least 2-3 hours on IPMAT practice questions whether you have simultaneous exams or with just a day or two for the exams. For the students who are presently in class 11th can commence preparation for IPMAT 2022 now.
