IIFT which is the short form for the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade commenced in 1963 by the Government of India with a vision to prepare management professionals to carry out India`s foreign trade and increase the level of export by developing human resources, analyzing and disseminating data and conducting research. IIFT was established first in Delhi and as of today it has 3 main campuses in India and 1 in Africa:

Examination for IIFT
- IIFT gives admission to its various programs only via IIFT examination which was earlier in offline format but since 2019 it is a Computer Based Test conducted by the National Test
- Almost 50,000 candidates sit for the IIFT exam every year
- IIFT exam is a 2-hour exam based on management aptitude comprising of the following domains which are Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, and Logical Reasoning and General Awareness
- For NRI/PIO candidates seeking admission to IIFT, IIFT considers GMAT score specifically for this category
- The pattern of the IIFT exam paper based on previous year exam patterns:
- There is no sectional time limit and the candidate is free to switch sections between the papers
- There is a sectional cut-off which is disclosed by IIFT much later after taking into account the scaled score of candidates
- Negative marking does exist in the IIFT exam paper, NTA deducts 1/3 mark for a wrong answer
- Marking scheme for the IIFT exam based on previous year IIFT exam patterns is that sections like Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, General awareness consist of 1 mark for every right answer and sections like Logical Reasoning and English Grammar are likely to contain 0.5 to 0.75 marks for a right answer, 0 marks are awarded for not attempting a question
- However, as the pattern of IIFT is subject to change, the marking scheme is likely to differ each year
Selection Criteria for IIFT
Eligibility
- To be eligible for the IIFT selection process, a student needs to have completed his/her graduation degree of a minimum 3 years duration from a recognized institute with 50% marks in 1st attempt for General category candidates
- Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD categories can apply for the IIFT exam with 45% marks in graduation
- There is no age limit to apply for the IIFT examination
- As per the guidelines given out by IIFT work experience is not necessary to apply to IIFT
- For NRI students, proof of them living in another country and a GMAT scorecard is required
Criteria for shortlisting
- The shortlisting for IIFT happens based on cumulative score which takes into account various parameters such as exam score, Class 10th score, 12th score, Graduation Score, Academic Diversity, Gender Diversity, Work experience
- Exam Score: Out of the total 100 marks of a candidate`s cumulative score, 73 marks are attributed to his/her performance in the IIFT exam for entrance
- Class 10th Score: 10 marks are based on the performance of a candidate in Class 10th, an example of how the scores are given out based on Class 10th marks :
The scoring is uniform across all subjects
- Class 12th Score: Similar to Class 10th score, class 12th score has the same weightage of 10 marks out of the total 100 marks and follows the same pattern of scoring as mentioned for Class 10th above
- Academic Diversity: To maintain academic diversity in their MBA batch, IIFT awards extra points to students who belong to non-Engineering backgrounds, in this category, scores given are as follows
Gender Diversity: IIFT is very clear on maintaining gender diversity on its campus, the cumulative score procedure that they follow takes into account points given based on gender diversity, in which the scoring based on gender is as such
Criteria for final selection to IIFT
- At the time of final selection into MBA at IIFT, a cumulative score out of 100 is taken, out of which the score in the IIFT exam has the highest magnitude, 45 marks out of 100 are for the IIFT exam score of a candidate
- Once shortlisted the candidates receive a call letter from IIFT for further selection procedures like written assessment, group discussion and personal interview, scores of which form a significant part of the 100 marks that are taken into consideration while finally selecting a candidate for the MBA program, the breakup of scores for all the 3 procedures are as such:
Work Experience: Though it is not a necessary parameter for applying to IIFT, points are awarded for the work experience of a candidate, work experience has a total of 3 points out of the 100 marks, the scoring based on the Work experience of a candidate follows the following pattern:
For the Year 2021
- Academic Diversity: Same as shortlisting, the final selection also takes into account the academic diversity of a candidate where candidates from Non-Engineering background are awarded 2 points and Engineering students are awarded 0 points, academic diversity holds a weightage of 2 points
- Gender Diversity: Gender diversity accounts for 2 points out of the total 100 at the time of final selection, where a female candidate receives 2 points and a male candidate receives 0 points
- Academic Consistency: Academic consistency takes into account the performance of a student across Class 10th and Class 12th and accounts for a total of 8 points, where 4 points are for performance in Class 10th and 4 points for the performance of a candidate in Class 12th, the method for awarding points is the same as done during the time of shortlisting.
Selection Process for IIFT
Round 1: Shortlisting of candidates
Candidates are shortlisted when call letters are given out based on IIFT exam score, the cut-off for the Year 2020 was 138 for the General category, 116 for the General(EWS) / OBC-NCL category, and 89 for SC/ST/PwD category. Candidates who have met the cut-off will be given a call letter and are called for the further selection processes by IIFT.
Round 2: WAT-GD-PI
Candidates who have been shortlisted and given a call letter are called for the next round comprising of 3 main processes mainly:
- Writing Assessment Test: Shortlisted candidates have to write an essay on any given topic. Evaluation for this takes into account the clarity and the comprehension power a candidate has along with presentation and expression skills of the candidate
- Group Discussion: Shortlisted candidates are divided into small groups and have to discuss in front of a panel of judges, GD checks a candidate’s leadership skills, teamwork skills, communication, and capacity to add insights to the discussion
- Personal Interview: The candidates who have been shortlisted appear for a personal interview where they are evaluated on various domains such as academics, extracurricular activities, and analytical performance of the candidate
